The wine world was astounded recently when Emirates Airline revealed its passengers had quaffed $1 billion worth of champagne in the last 16 years.
“Emirates purchases more champagne than any other airline in the world,” said a spokeswoman.
Emirates keeps its own cellar in France with 6.5 million bottles.
Every hour of every day in some corner of the globe champagne – and much other wine – is being poured on more than 120 Emirates jets in what it says is its “stars in the sky” program.
If you wonder where the money’s spent, consider that the airline has been serving first class passengers bubbles like Dom Pérignon Plénitude 2 Vintage 2003 at $880 a pop.
Emirates is one of the seven United Arab Emirates and is government owned and the airline has exclusive rights to serve Moet & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot, and Dom Perignon aboard its aircraft until 2024.
What happens after that is anyone’s guess, and millions of bottles or top vintage champagne are in play.
Emirates treasures its links to Dom Pérignon and is the venerable champagne House regards the airline as its number one global wine partner.
Business class passengers are offered Veuve Clicquot and Moet & Chandon and the Emirates lounge in Dubai has a Moet & Chandon bar.
Moet & Chandon is also available for purchase in economy class on certain flights.
It seems long-haul flights are turning into ritzy champagne tasting sessions across the aviation industry.
