Mayday, mayday. Celebs and their PJs—the private jets, not the jim-jams—have been in the news of late, and it’s equal parts infuriating and fascinating.
The current furor took off when Kylie Jenner posted an Instagram picture of her and Travis Scott and their respective private jets, captioned “You wanna take mine or yours?” (Casual couple shot stuff.) Given everything going on in the world right now—skyrocketing gas prices, a cost of living crisis, climate change that contributed to a day so hot that fires started spontaneously across the U.K.—it was a stupefyingly blithe display of excess, even for a family that’s had a long history of “let them eat cake” moments. (Like, recently, Kim’s sensitive advice to women that you too could have her sort of success if only you’d “Get your f***ing ass up and work. It seems like nobody wants to work these days.”)
Where this story really gained cruising altitude, destination virality, was when internet sleuths started digging into the environmental impact of private jets, which apparently Kylie hops in and out of in the same way you or I might get on and off the subway. For example: While we can’t be sure she was on the plane at the time, her PJ was recorded taking a three (!!!) minute flight on July 12, a distance that would have been a 40 minute drive, even in L.A. traffic.
