One of the most unforgettable characters I ever met became a treasured mentor and I think of him often, even though he has been entertaining, I’m sure, for some time in that heavenly realm for those who have crossed over the river Jordan.

Bob Murphey, a lawyer, cowboy, humorist, and after-dinner speaker from Nacogdoches, was already well established in what he called the “Pellet Pea and Fried Chicken Circuit” when I was just starting to spread my wings, scratching for chicken feed in this highly competitive field. I heard him give hilarious talks several times before I got up enough nerve to actually introduce myself and ask if he would give me some pointers to help me compete with him and others like the dentist, Dr. Charlie Jarvis (also deceased).

So I drove quite a distance to hear him, introduced myself after his talk and boldly asked if he would come hear me and give me some advice. He was very polite but only said, “Well boy (I was maybe six months younger than him) if you are ever giving a talk in downtown Nacogdoches I’ll sure do it.” Well the chances of that happening were slim to none but danged if I didn’t get a booking for a meeting of a teacher’s association on the campus of Stephen F. Austin (in downtown Nacogdoches by golly), so I called Bob and held him to his promise. Again,…

Meanwhile, the Biden administration is thwarting U.S. energy development, and Congress can’t pass bipartisan permitting reform to make energy siting and transmission more predictable. This all while the nation suffers from the imperfect storm of gasoline and natural gas costs, increasing frequency of blackouts and brownouts, and a greater reliance on foreign energy sources.

Considering the genuine challenges the nation is facing, the United States should focus its resources on tangible solutions that are available now.

Around the world, more than 2 billion people live in energy poverty, and millions of Americans struggle to pay for electricity and transportation fuels. Separately, the war in Ukraine has highlighted an over-reliance on Russian natural gas in European countries — a gap that U.S. natural gas could help fill. In fact, the administration has promised more U.S. gas to England and other allied nations despite a history of making it more difficult for U.S. energy companies to extract and transport those resources domestically.

Airline executives bristled last year when government officials, led by U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, blamed the carriers for causing thousands of flight cancellations and mistreating their customers.

The shoe is on the other foot now after a technology outage at the Federal Aviation Administration grounded planes for a time earlier this week, but airline leaders are taking a different tack.

They’ve avoided harsh words and score-settling. Instead they’re calling on Congress and the Biden administration to give the FAA more staff and more money to upgrade its systems.

“The FAA, I know, is doing the very best they can with what they have, but we need to stand behind the FAA,” Delta Air Lines

CEO Robert Isom praised the FAA for “calling a time out” Wednesday morning — temporarily barring planes nationwide from taking off — while it fixed a system that provides safety and other information to pilots and airline dispatchers. He said it showed that safety comes first.

“Investment is required,” Isom told CNBC. “It’s going to be billions of dollars, and it’s not something that is done overnight.”

The North American economy remains strong, despite predictions of a recession on the horizon.”

Well, this was the lead portion of the 2019 Rate Outlook that I wrote, just before COVID took hold. These words are equally relevant today, as does the line that “…there are so many moving parts and indecipherable variables that predictions are in lock-step with the old adage that ‘forecasts are either lucky or lousy.’”

The wealthiest and most famous people in the world have long favored the conveniences of private jet travel, and among younger generations, owning your own jet has become the ultimate status symbol. 

With an ever-growing number of choices, more customization options, and greater public scrutiny due to environmental concerns, selecting a private jet has become one of the biggest—and priciest—decisions a mogul can make. 

While private jet purchases occasionally make the news—pop superstar Beyoncé famously celebrated her husband Jay-Z’s first Father’s Day by gifting him a $40 million Bombardier Challenger 850, complete with a cream leather living room, kitchen, bedroom, and two bathrooms—most acquisitions are shrouded in secrecy.

Megan Wolf, chief operating officer of Flexjet, a Richmond Heights, Ohio-based provider of fractional ownership aircraft, leasing, and jet card services, has seen interest spike in recent years.

“The biggest challenge facing ultra-high-net-worth people right now is the lack of aircraft available for purchase,” Wolf says. “After the initial lockdowns, private jet activity has soared since the pandemic started.”

Covid-19. Airport chaos. Lack of available flights.

Many travelers say those are the reasons they ditched airlines for private jets during the past two years of the pandemic.

But a new survey shows most of the newly converted aren’t ready to return to commercial aviation just yet.

Some 94% of those new to the industry said they plan to continue flying privately in the future, according to a survey by the private aviation website Private Jet Card Comparisons.

“Users have seen firsthand how private aviation can save time, both at the airport and by using more convenient alternative airports,” said Doug Gollan, the website’s editor-in-chief, in a press release announcing the results.

However, respondents also indicated they may not be flying privately as frequently as they did before.

The percentage of respondents who said they will continue to use private aviation “regularly” dropped from 57% last year to 40% this year.

And the number who said they’ll fly privately “occasionally” when the pandemic ends rose from 43% to 55%.

About 6% said they plan to stop altogether after the pandemic, but that’s up from zero who said the same last year.

The forecast for longer-term clients was more stable, according to the survey published in October. Nearly 60% indicated they plan to fly privately as often as before the pandemic, while another 29% said they intend to fly privately even frequently in the future.

The collision between two World War II-era military planes at a Dallas air show on Saturday was the latest in a long list of crashes involving vintage planes used or designed for military purposes. Some recent fatal crashes in the U.S. and abroad:

— Nov. 12, 2022: A P-63 Kingcobra fighter plane collided with a B-17 Flying Fortress bomber at a Dallas air show, killing all six people aboard the two vintage aircraft.

— Oct. 2, 2019: A four-engine, propeller-driven B-17G Flying Fortress bomber with 13 people aboard crashed at Bradley International Airport, north of Hartford, Connecticut, during a traveling vintage aircraft show. Seven people were killed and six were hurt. The National Transportation Safety Board found that pilot error was the probable cause, with inadequate maintenance a contributing factor.

— Nov. 17, 2018: A privately owned vintage World War II Mustang fighter airport plane crashed into the parking lot of an apartment complex in Fredericksburg, Texas, killing the pilot and a passenger. The P-51D Mustang was returning after performing a flyover during a living history show at the national Museum of the Pacific War. The aircraft was destroyed, and several vehicles in the parking lot were damaged.

SpaceX rolled out aviation-specific Starlink satellite internet service on Tuesday, with Elon Musk’s company looking to expand further into the inflight WiFi market.

The company is charging $150,000 for the hardware needed to connect a jet to Starlink, with monthly service costs between $12,500 a month and $25,000 a month. Deliveries to aviation customers are scheduled to “start in mid-2023,” the company said, and reservations require a $5,000 initial payment.

SpaceX advertises “global coverage” through a flat-panel antenna that customers would install on top of an aircraft. SpaceX said it is seeking Federal Aviation Administration certificates for a variety of aircraft, most of which are typically owned and operated as private jets.

As for the quality of the service, SpaceX says Starlink aviation customers can expect speeds up to 350 Megabits per second, “enabling all passengers to access streaming-capable internet at the same time.”

“Passengers can engage in activities previously not functional in flight, including video calls, online gaming, virtual private networks and other high data rate activities,” SpaceX said on its Starlink website.
